Biography
Paul is an experienced trial lawyer with a diverse civil and commercial litigation practice. He regularly advises and acts for clients in real estate and construction litigation, shareholder litigation, insurance and tort litigation, civil fraud and fiduciary claims, and other complex commercial disputes. Paul also has significant experience in judicial reviews and injunctions.
Paul has appeared as counsel in all levels of court in British Columbia and before various administrative tribunals and arbitration centres. He has been a member of Lawson Lundell’s Commercial Litigation Group since 2015.
Paul is also a member of the firm’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee which is responsible for identifying and guiding the implementation of measures to further advance equity, diversity and inclusion at Lawson Lundell.

- Acted as defence counsel at a four-day trial of an action to recover a $600,000 deposit in connection with a collapsed real estate transaction. Successfully obtained a dismissal of the action with costs, as well as a dismissal of the appeal of the trial judgment: Angus v. CDRW Holdings Ltd., 2022 BCSC 1001; Angus v. CDRW Holdings Ltd., 2023 BCCA 330
- Acted as counsel for a private school at a nine day trial to recover damages against an alleged consultant in fraudulent misrepresentation. Successfully obtained an award of damages of $154,597, dismissal of the counterclaim, and special costs of $307,993. Successfully obtained a dismissal of the appeal: Chao Yin Canada Group Inc. v. - Acted as counsel for a real estate developer in an action against a former director for breach of fiduciary duty. Successfully obtained an order striking amendments to a response to civil claim in which the defendants withdrew admissions of fact without consent or leave of the court: Dacheng Realestate Development Company Ltd. v. Hu, 2023 BCSC 84
- Acted as counsel for a casino operator in defending a human right complaint. Successfully obtained a dismissal of the complaint prior to the hearing on the basis that proceeding with the complaint would not further the purposes of British Columbia Human Rights Code: Iversen v. Gateway Casinos & Entertainment, 2023 BCHRT 3
- Acted as counsel for a property owner on a judicial review to overturn an administrative tribunal decision on procedural fairness grounds: Successfully obtained an order declaring the tribunal decision void: Bedwell Bay Construction v. Ball, 2022 BCSC 559
- Acted as counsel for a court-appointed receiver at a 9-day trial to recover damages against corporate directors in connection with the misappropriation of GST funds collected in the course of a real estate development project. Successfully obtained an award of damages of $304,788.11 in knowing assistance in breach of trust, together with double costs: Long v. Brar, 2021 BCSC 1799
- Acted as counsel for three shareholders of a tech start-up at a summary trial to recover damages for breach of an oral share purchase agreement. Successfully obtained an award of damages of $235,265.41, together with double costs: Huang v. Meng, 2020 BCSC 2097; Huang v. Meng, 2021 BCSC 819
- Acted as counsel for a landlord on a judicial review to overturn an administrative tribunal decision on procedural fairness grounds: Successfully obtained an order declaring the tribunal decision void: Khan v Savino, 2020 BCSC 555; Khan v. Savino, 2020 BCSC 2120
- Acted as counsel for a homeowner at an 11-day trial to recover damages against a design-building consultant in connection with a failed home construction project. Successfully obtained an award of damages of $208,547 in unjust enrichment, together with a partial award of special costs: Lu v. 421688 B.C. Ltd., 2020 BCSC 93; Lu v. 421688 B.C. - Acted as counsel for a contractor at a 4-day trial to recover damages for breach of contract. - Acted as counsel for a lender at a 2-day summary trial to recover damages pursuant to a loan and investment agreement. Successfully obtained judgment against he borrower and personal guarantors for $1.1 million: Yin v. Abexco Inc., 2018 BCSC 1821
- Acted as defence counsel for an Alberta lawyer in a professional negligence action. Successfully obtained judgment by summary trial dismissing the action on a limitations defence: Misterly v. Nowicki, 2017 BCSC 2358
- Acted as counsel for a financial consultant at a 6-day trial to recover damages for wrongful termination of a consulting agreement. Successfully obtained judgment at trial for $107,893.33 with costs. Judgment in wrongful dismissal damages upheld on appeal: TCF Ventures Corp. v. - Acted as counsel for a mining consultant in a dispute over unpaid consulting fees. Successfully obtained an order upholding the pre-judgment garnishment of $118,125 from the defendant.
